Z-House addresses the requirements of a couple seeking to share life experiences while maintaining a co-habiting partnership. The design was guided by a target of 2,000 square feet of livable space, emphasizing an open spatial flow and ample natural light throughout the home.
The clients desired privacy in tandem with communal living, supporting seamless daily routines.
Situated on a compact and sharply angled triangular lot near downtown Cary, the site posed the challenge of developing a single-story residence.
The architectural response was a z-shaped plan derived from arranging the program elements into a double "L" with the southern wing angled slightly outward toward the property boundary to enhance the south-facing courtyard and maximize its real estate.
Consequently, this configuration provided two private wings—each one functioning as a suite for each of the owners with its own triangular courtyard and vistas. This in effect provided privacy yet the feeling of being connected through the house.
The main body of the building is where the entry serve as connective element, housing the living room and social spaces that unite both north and south wings and their respective courtyards.
