A photographer commissioned the design of a space intended to foster community engagement. Photo Farm was conceived as a rural photography studio focused on facilitating interactions with nature, both with and without cameras, through professional, educational, and recreational programs.
This humble agrarian-inspired project is located on a 36-acre parcel within a sustainable silviculture farm program in the rural forest of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The property is divided into two gable-shaped volumes, distinguishing public and private areas: a photo studio and an artist’s residence guest suite. An earth-sheltered dark room beneath the photo studio integrates seamlessly with the site's topography and foundation structure. The project is strategically positioned at an angle against the landscape to maximize expansive natural views of nature.
The exterior cladding consists of vertical shiplap siding manufactured from upcycled rice hulls, which employs a zero-waste process. This material is water- and pest-resistant, and fully recyclable. A highly insulated building envelope ensures optimal thermal comfort, while solar panels provide sustainable heating and cooling.
The project prioritizes programmatic flexibility through adaptable spaces and connecting to nature, by placing biophilic principles at the heart of the experience. Visitors enjoy a sense of well-being and sanctuary, fostering inspiration and artistic engagement.
