Our Team
Joe Lopez, AIA, NCARB
Principal and founder of Habanero Architecture, Joe Lopez, was born and raised in Merida, Mexico where he earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of Yucatan (UADY) in 2008. During his architectural studies he was able to study abroad in Panama City at the Ithsmus University in Panama, and in Rennes at the Ecole D'Architecture de la Bretagne, France [EAB - School of Architecture of Brittany, France].
Previous to moving to the United States, Jose ran a design-build studio where he worked as an architect and general contractor. As principal in charge, he was able to design several small residential and commercial projects. In 2009 he moved to North Carolina and was honored to work for great firms where he was exposed to a diverse collection of projects of different scales and complexities.
He has ample knowledge of construction materials and methods as well as a deep passion for quality, sustainability and thoughtful design. While working for Szotak Design and ThoughtCraft Architects (previously known as CUBE design + research) he built an extensive portfolio of highly crafted projects. He honed his proficiency with clients and project management, allowing him to skillfully represent clients' vision and goals.
Jose resides in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is a husband and father of an 10-year old girl and a 6-year old boy, they love spending time in their modern home designed and built by their father. In his free time, he enjoys simple things in life, like soccer, hockey, and music. Travelling is one of his favorite activities. He always carries his camera to capture new stories to tell and ideas to ponder. While studying abroad he traveled through Europe and learned about its people, culture, urbanism, architecture diversity, as well as material and methods of construction.

2. What types of projects does Habanero Architecture specialize in?
We specialize in modern custom residential & multifamily projects, culture & community projects, and hospitality projects. Our work ranges from contemporary home transformations to ground-up buildings designed around lifestyle and experience.
3. Do you only design modern architecture?
While contemporary architecture is at the core of our practice, we approach every project individually. Our goal is not to force a style, but to create thoughtful architecture that responds to the site, context, and the client’s vision.
4. What is the first step to working with Habanero?
The process begins with a discovery meeting where we learn about your goals, lifestyle, project vision, timeline, and budget. This initial conversation helps us understand how we can best guide your project from the very beginning. Please fill out a new project application here, we will be in touch withing 24hrs. to schedule a 30-min. complimentary design consultation meeting.

Yes. Renovations and additions are a major part of our practice.
6. Do you work with builders and consultants during construction?
Absolutely. We help you design and coordinate your project from beginning, during construction and all the way to the end. We believe strong collaboration is essential to a successful project. We coordinate closely with builders, engineers, consultants, and vendors throughout the process to help maintain design integrity and streamline communication.
7. How involved will I be during the design process?
We encourage a collaborative process where your input plays an important role. Our goal is to guide you through each phase clearly and confidently while making the experience enjoyable and stress-free.
8. How are architectural fees determined?
Fees are based on the project scope, size, complexity, and level of service required. Our fees typically reflect a 8-14% of the total construction cost of your project. After the discovery phase, we provide a tailored proposal outlining the services included and the investment associated with your project.
9. Does Habanero Architecture work on projects outside of North Carolina?
Yes. While many of our projects are based in the Triangle area, including Raleigh and Cary, we are open to projects throughout the U.S. and beyond depending on the opportunity and scope. We are NCARB certified and are able to practice architecture in any State and countries affiliated with the NCARB international reciprocity practice accord.
