Located in Raleigh’s historic Five Points neighborhood, this architectural project blends preservation and innovation to meet the needs of a modern family while honoring the character of the original Craftsman-style home. The homeowners, a family of four, sought to maintain the integrity of their beloved house while adapting it to contemporary living. The renovation focused on opening the original structure into a light-filled, communal space that accommodates the family’s daily routines and shared time. A carefully designed open floor plan now connects the kitchen, dining, and living areas.
The program included a house extension bridged by a connector to seclude a principal suite, while a secondary dwelling unit (ADU) occupies the upper floor of the addition, offering flexible space for guests, a home office and music room. The extension’s design interprets the language of the original brick facade through angled, shifted forms, drawing inspiration from its rustic texture imperfections and distinctive hip rooflines. This approach results in a sculpted volume that appears as a singular mass, with deliberate subtractions and articulated surfaces echoing the craftsmanship of the existing home.
